High Performance, Scalable and Cost Optimized AWS Cloud Infrastructure for Chip Development.
DescriptionAstera Labs, Exotanium and Synopsys have partnered to demonstrate the first real-world example of reliably running compute intensive, high memory and long running physical design (PD) workloads on interruptible spot instances. Companies like Astera Labs have pioneered a 100% on-cloud paradigm for chip development. While Astera Labs has deployed spot instances available in AWS for frontend RTL simulations, large, long running PD workloads have necessitated the use of stable on-demand instances. Consequently, a disproportionately large portion of EDA cloud expense is driven by PD tools. We present a novel method, using Exotanium X-Spot technology, to enable PD workloads to use a combination of spot and on-demand instances depending on spot availability, seamlessly migrating between instances with negligible loss in performance thereby achieving significant cost benefits. We ran the full suite of backend EDA tools, including Synopsys Design Compiler®, Synopsys ICC™ II, Synopsys Fusion Compiler™, Synopsys StarRC™, Synopsys PrimeTime®, and Synopsys IC Validator™ with X-Spot. We achieved execution times nearly at-par with on-demand VMs and reliable operation over spot instances. This innovative approach allows chip development engineers to fully unleash the benefits of using public clouds to speed up time-to-tapeout while carefully balancing infrastructure costs.
