SILICON DEBUG OF REAL TIME CLOCK MACRO USING NANOPROBING TECHNIQUE
DescriptionIn some AMD SoCs, on silicon, the current drawn from the Real Time Clock IP (RTC) in the mode where the IP is driven by the coin cell battery only (G3 state) was much larger than spec of 5uA. In order to root-cause the source of this large current, the sub blocks of the RTC IP were inspected. After eliminating various potential suspects, with the help of data from Thermal Emission Microscopy images, the suspicion was largely on the 272-byte RAM in the ARTC sub block. However, since millions of dollars and Time To Market were at stake, before embarking on a design fix, we needed to find an approach through which we could definitively and conclusively identify the culprits. To accomplish the same, we resorted to 'NanoProbing' which then helped us conclusively prove the culprit and thereby enabled us to debug the silicon issue.
