Presentation
Security, Timing Synchronization, and Power Saving for Automotive Ethernet: Functional Verification Challenges and Its Solutions
DescriptionThe automotive industry rapidly adopted the automotive Ethernets such as 10Base-T1, 100Base-T1, and Multi-gig Ethernet-like 1G,2.5GBaseT1 Phys.
Along with BaseT1 Phys, Industry adopted the timing synchronization protocols like Precision time protocol (PTP) and added the layer 2 security protocol like MacSec combined to become the PTP over MacSec.
The automotive industry is observing the widespread rollout of Ethernet in vehicles due to its faster speed than CAN(FD), scalability, cost & energy efficiency, less prone to failure, and greatly simplified troubleshooting. Automotive Ethernet has become the perfect candidate for an automotive network connecting various sensors, actuators, and ECUs. Automotive Ethernet provides,
1. 10BaseT1s Ethernet Phy provides low-speed/low-cost/low-power application through "transceiver (3-Pin interface)” & multidrop topology and collision-free communication through PLCA.
2. Automotive networks are prone to third-party wiretapping, infiltration, man-in-the-middle, and playback attacks due to inline connectors and internet/cloud connectivity of Vehicles. While maintaining the timing accuracy for mission-critical applications, protecting the vehicle network from vulnerable threats is mandatory. The consolidated solution is PTP over MacSec.
3. Multi-gig ethernet 1G/2.5G/5G/10G BaseT1 Phys are more suitable for high bandwidth requirements such as info entertainment systems.
This paper/presentation will discuss the Ethernet Phy's usages, Security and timing synchronization requirements, challenges, and solutions. The Paper will be concluded with functional verification challenges of automotive ethernet and its solution.
