IAM: A Protocol to Improve Security in ISO 15118-20 EV Charging via Remote Attestation
DescriptionElectric Vehicle (EV) 'DC Fast Charging' directly connects an EV's battery to an external charger. A compromised charger may damage the EV, or be used as part of a demand-side power grid attack. To detect such chargers prior to charging, we investigate extending the ISO15118-20 charging standard by adding support for firmware integrity verification through remote attestation. We present system and threat models to develop requirements, before defining the protocol extension itself. A software implementation of the proposed extension confirms backwards compatibility against an existing controller adhering to the original standard, and the performance overhead is shown to be small.
