Moving the Center of Cloud Servers from Processors to IPUs
DescriptionSince the start of computing, server design has been processor-centric. As infrastructure functionality, such as network virtualization, storage virtualization, encryption, etc. consumes more and more computational power, the center of the server is moving from processors to Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs). This talk motivates this move, describes how IPUs work today, and discusses future directions and challenges.
